sagarj Hi, I have a laptop with win7 64bit ;320GB HDD. I shrank my c: from 151 GB to 90GB.I now have 40GB partition as "UNALLOCATED". "unallocated" is basically a partition that hasnt been formatted. Now i tried to install ubuntu 11.04 from a live PD.Now when installing ubuntu, when the part comes where i have to select a partition to install->it just shows all my partitions as one!! I cannot see the separate "UNALLOCATED" partition. How do I proceed? Also I would have provided a screenshot..but idon't know how to take one outside windows.
m-sabra in Windows format the UNALLOCATED partition into NTFS format, now retry installing UBUNTU you should found two partitions.
ibxoful Press right click on computer and manage then select Storage>Disk Management on the left side right click on the partition which is unallocated and press create or somthing
Georges On the following screen, what was your selected option ? In you have chosen 1, you'll not be able to detect other partitions. I recommend using option 3.
CSGeek Shrink the Windows volume. Leave the resulting partition unallocated. Choose option 1 from Georges's screenshot: Ubuntu should install itself on the unallocated partition.
eurybaric Personally, as a rule of thumb i'd always go with choice 3 of George's screenshot and carefully choose/edit the partitions manually. U can never be too sure..
sagarj Ok: i tried doing both:1.keeping the 40gb partition as "unallocated" ie. unformatted 2.formatting the partition into NTFS from win 7 None work. @georges:I don't get that screenshot..i get a similar one with options 2 & 3 only I selected option 3 and proceeded.Yet I couldn't see a free partition. The partitions i could see were:93gb(=my win7) and a 220gb partition(=my unallocated space +my other partitions in win7)!!!
ed-4009 I've seen this before, especially when the partition table has been rewritten a few times, or that you have too many partitions. Check out this Thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1694580 Or this article: http://www.rodsbooks.com/missing-parts/ Hope this helps.
