andrew55 wroteI honestly don't think that was offensive reply. He was honest about the situation in Lebanon. However, i guess what he didn't address was your SNR situation. You must be synced on adsl1 which probably gives you a higher maximum rate than sodetel is able to give you. You probably have some line issues at home due to the variability in maximum rate. Are you using filters for your phone and dsl?
Well, let's ignore the email anyway. It wasn't very offensive but the answer was too broad and didn't address my issue.
I only have one filter which is the one that Sodetel set-up on installation back in 2010.
Can the SNR dropping come from the fact that the CO are being overcrowded ?
I can't investigate a lot into the problem, and by the way it improved a bit since yesterday for some reason (syncing on 3.9Mb/s with a max of 4.5 which is OK).
andrew55
Agreed. He didn't solve your problem.
The least you can do is start with your own house. Every phone that connects to the phone line needs to have a filter. Ideally, if there is one phone just connect it to the filter supplied by Sodetel and connect the dsl modem to the same filter. Obviously, the filter is marked since each uses a particular frequency range. If your SNR significantly decreases every time you use the phone something is still wrong.
Also, some people have an Ogero box right outside their apartment building and you probably need to have an electrician come by if there's an issue with that.
With regards to the SNR drop from the CO, I'm not too sure b/c i really don't know what Ogero is doing in these central offices but what i can tell you is that most of the SNR drop is due to poor copper wire lines and poor connections at the CO and else where. In some cases, your ISP, if it has access to the central office, may increase voltage decreasing your attentuation but that has the disadvantage of making the line more noisy. I don't think ISPs do that in Lebanon.
I suggest you use a modem that uses a "broadcom chipset". Modems supplied by your ISP should be good enough. In case you want to upgrade, just get a good router and keep your modem in case it has a good broadcom chipset.

Anyone having brief but constant disconnects ( once every ~45min for couple of seconds) ?
AvoK95
Well I actually bashed them quite bad on Facebook. Since then I've been getting great speeds and ping.

Guys, anyone experiencing crazy latency (2000 ms)
and when tracerouting, all the delay is from my public IP to Sodetel's Gateway, it works fine after 40 minutes, and this shit happens several times aday, and till now, sodetel didn't figure out the problem,
am thinking of changing my modem, what do you guys think?

I don't mind a fair FUP like the VISP system where it tells when you are FUPed and for how much time, but being subtle about it to your customers is what's annoying.
With the VISP fup, you can manage your downloads to avoid getting fUPed or get it when you don't need the internet (weekends and such).
Sodetel are treating their customers like "lebanese daweyir rasmiye" using lies and corruption. They should be clear about the problems, offers and provide an estimate time for a solution or they will lose subscribers for that.
ironman
@AvoK, nah don't think its FUP because i am subscribed to the " Super expensive Gaming package " Plus, i use around 20 GB out of 40, but what i ASSUME, is that when iCloud backups start (Upload), the crazy latency occurs, still not so sure, but i tried that test yesterday.
omar_killer
For the last 4 days I'm experiencing this crazy latency as ironman does (3000ms)
I'm really pissed, when I sent them them my first email they told me that it's normal (wtf),
the second time "sharsha7ton",they never replied.
I really want to change isp but I can't afford to wait a month without internet access.
a-l
anyone of you guys is experiencing very slow internet.
by very slow i mean downloads not reaching more than 30KB/s and a torturous browsing experience ( facebook 9gag outlook even lebgeeks are barely opening), if two computers are running on the network at the same time the internet disconnects from one of them.
its killing me, and when i ask them they tell me that it's a problem in all lebanon, where the ministry is working on the infrastructure, and its expecting to finish at the end of this month.
ironman
@omar_killer, do you have any iPhones? iPads? if yes, my test (that i am 100% sure now) is that crazy latencies are caused by upload that iCloud backup does (which occurs when Apple devices are plugged to the electricity), whenever i unplug my iphone from the charger, latency is back to normal.
try it and let me know.
But the biggest conclusion is that .... Sodetel Sucks.
omar_killer
No I don't have any apple products, but renewing IP address temporarily fixes the problem.

okay so after numerous tries of contacting sodetel with the regular Questions i've tried everything they suggested and the problem is still persistent
I m getting constant internet outages for about 5 to 10 seconds every 5 to 6 minutes . I've tried using a different laptop to see if the problem persists, a wired connection, even my iphone will suddenly disconnect if i m in a skype call or randomly browsing, the wifi signal will still be there but my internet just stops working or has extreme delay.
They insisted i do a traceroute which i did, and after i explained that the traceroute is fine they still insisted i mail it to them, which to my surprise got an answer of " the traceroute seems fine" ( i was very very VERY tempted to reply NO SHIT! , but i didn't )
Anyway was hoping anyone can share their thoughts on what can be causing this or if anyone is experiencing this problem or something similar
Btw, someone mentioned skype uPnP function should be disabled so i tried disabling it and even just closing skype but the problem persisted

@Devaz: Did you check/monitor your modem's DSL stats?
Devaz
Hey invader, yes I did. No errors found and all stats are normal. And I got an email from sodetel stating there was no noise on my line since Its at "25/28 which is very good" . I'm gonna get a new modem/router today and see if the problem persists..
Any other suggestions are more than appreciated
ironman
@Devaz,
same here
getting random disconnections (while GAMING !!!!)
the disconnections last for around 3 minutes (the duration needed to get me kicked out of the games)
so i am mainly switching to 3g, and my 3g OVERconsumption now is around 30$...
So really i have nothing to say more about this shitty company called Sodetel.
Devaz
@Ironman
Funny thing is that i'm registered to the gaming package, yet i am unable to even maintain a skype call ( it just drops every 4 min ) They tried to convince me that it was from my end but i did all the necessary testing and changed from my end which led to proving them wrong, they wanted to monitor my line for another 24 hours because they claim that my modem was turned off during the monitoring process ( even though i have a UPS for the router/modem and it literally never turns off and i kept my laptop On, on purpose and it showed no disconnection from the wifi but anyway ) now i m waiting to see what their answer and 24 hour monitoring will unveil.
P.S : it s funny you re having issues as well cause they claimed that i was THE ONLY ONE who was suffering such an issue, took me 1 minute to proving them wrong by just checking their facebook page
Devaz
Sodetel just got back to me, saying it s most likely an Ogero Problem ( SHOCKER! totally didn't see that answer coming ) and that they re sending a team to check it tomorrow and that it might not be their problem so i ll have to pay for the repairs and for ogero to fix it ...... yeah That just happened
They also mentioned that it might be from their end but that they might not be able to fix it just yet ...... I shit you not! That's what they said
AvoK95
They actually admitted that it's their problem?! *gasp*!

i just called sodetel, asking about FUP on my line. what i was used to is that after a couple of days of 500 ish MB per day, the connection comes back to its regular speed. it's been 7 days on such consumption per day and the speed is not going over 100 Kbps.
when i asked about it they said that starting this month, they established a new policy that once FUP is applied to a line it won't be removed before a month passes.
what do you think?
