rolf J4D wroteGeorges, Suez canal ;) I remember reading a couple of years back about a boat cutting a bunch of underwater cables there, and reducing the internet capacity of the whole Asian continent by about 75% :) The internet was supposedly designed to survive a nuclear war, but can it survive an under-skilled boat captain maneuvering in the Suez canal?

As i remember one of the cables is said to be cut by a 6 ton anchor falling directly on top of it. What was suspicious was that many cables were actually cut. Some rumors pointed fingers at israel since it was not affected at all from this, while Iran and many Arab countries did. Btw, you guys might want to check and read about Operation Ivy Bells. A covert huge scale operation by the US to tap USSR undersea Copper communication cables back in the 70s-80s.
J4D dp0001 wroteAnyone knows the purpose of the Berytar cable? Clearly, connecting Beirut to Tripoly, Saida and an extra node in Syria. BTW, These cables are not used only for "Internet", Normal telephony passes through them as well.
ahk40a As far as I can remember, I once got an information regarding two cables previous to the installation of IMEWE. The First one connects Lebanon to Cyprus and the other one connects us to Alexandria through Tartous. The One to Cyprus is CADMOS, and the other one is Berytar that connects us to Alexandria through Tartous via Aletar. Very nice site indeed. :)
